Modern Filipino restaurant on East Hastings in Vancouver with a boxed Kamayan Feast for pickup or delivery and sharing platters in the dining room.
A pizza box lined with banana leaves is how Halina sends out its version of a kamayan feast. The restaurant's Kamayan Feast Box holds two pieces of chicken inasal, a serving of Pancit Batil Patong with crispy liempo, egg and chicken skin, four Slamdunk chicken wings, jasmine rice and four pork lumpia, and its instructions are simple: open it in the middle of the table, share everything and do not rush. It can be ordered for pickup or for delivery through DoorDash.
The idea comes with some history, which the restaurant sets out on its Feast Box page. Kamayan comes from kamay, the Filipino word for hand, and means eating with your hands from a shared spread. The page traces the boodle fight to the Philippine military in the early 1900s, when soldiers and officers ate side by side from long tables lined with banana leaves, regardless of rank, before the style spread to family celebrations and reunions.
Halina itself is at 2439 E Hastings St in Vancouver's Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood, and it is listed on Google as HALINÁ Modern Filipino Kitchen + Bar. It grew out of Bigboy's Chigs To-Go, a takeout and catering business run by four friends, into a full dining room that pairs Filipino recipes with Canadian ingredients.
The dine-in menu keeps the sharing theme. Liempo and chicken inasal both come as platters sized for three or four, and the salo-salo section adds sizzling sisig, crispy pata and a bone marrow broth. Groups of 21 or more can ask about a private event through the event request form.
The restaurant opens for weekend brunch at 10 a.m. Hours are 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday. Reservations and pickup orders are handled through Toast, and there is a free two-hour community parking lot at Kamloops Street and Franklin Street. The phone number is 778-504-0970, and the published email address is [email protected].
