Where to Eat in Port Coquitlam: A Neighbor's Guide

PoCo's restaurants never formed a single district, and that says something about the city. The kitchens sit where the shops sit, folded into the same strips where everyone already runs errands, so dinner happens on the way home from the grocery run or the commute. The result is a restaurant scene that is modest about itself and surprisingly deep on cuisine: Korean and Szechuan on one corridor, Greek and Indian on another, seafood and pancake houses on the old main street. Nobody is performing for visitors. The rooms are set up for regulars, which is exactly how I like a dining room to be.

Start on the Shaughnessy Street strip, where the old downtown still does its lunch trade. Jimmy's Lunch Box is the kind of counter the heritage strip was built for: quick, unfussy, and busy with people who eat there every week. A little further along, inside the big commercial block on the street, Eastern Pearl Seafood Restaurant takes up a large footprint for seafood the way the east side likes it, with room for family dinners and celebrations. The strip rewards a slow walk. Storefronts change over, but the habit of eating downtown has not.

The Lougheed corridor is where the density really shows. The commercial complex on the highway side of the strip packs in kitchens from across Asia. We Grill Korean Eatery and Phở Huy Restaurant share the same complex, and Wah Wing Szechuan Restaurant sits just up the corridor, and the whole stretch is set up for commuters: easy in, easy out, back on the highway toward Coquitlam or home to Mary Hill. Izba Bistro sits a little apart on the Lougheed strip, and it is the room I send people to when they want a proper sit-down dinner without leaving the corridor.

The blocks around downtown add their own tables. Spice Cart Indian Cuisine works the Prairie Avenue blocks, Pallas Athena Greek Kousina holds its corner on Dominion Avenue, and Orrange Kitchen + Bar brings a kitchen-and-bar format to Nicola Avenue that suits the after-work crowd. These are the rooms that anchor their stretches of street, and they earn their regulars the PoCo way, one repeat visit at a time. When I have visitors from out of town, I usually end up at one of these rather than driving anywhere, because the food is good and the walk there is half the point.

A few habits make eating out here easier. Most of the city's restaurants lean casual, with counter service and takeout built in, so phone ahead when you want a table for more than four, and earlier still on weekends. Breakfast is its own category: Amigo Pancake House Restaurant on McAllister Avenue has carried that load for the city for as long as I can remember, and weekend mornings have a lineup logic of their own. Check each listing for details, confirm hours before you cross town, and treat the directory as a starting map. PoCo's kitchen doors open and close with the city's rhythms, and the good rooms are worth planning around.
